Submission Guidelines

The Carriage Association of America publishes a wide variety of articles in two separate publications.

Five times a year, the CAA’s magazine, The Carriage Journal, publishes articles on the history of carriages, driving, and the horse-drawn era; carriage makers (past and present); restoration; driving and training how-to; and more.

Every two years, World on Wheels publishes longer articles that go into more depth and detail on the manufacture, history, use, conservation, and restoration of horse-drawn vehicles.  Many of these articles will have been presented as lectures at CAA symposia, others may be research papers, and others may simply be more in-depth articles than typical magazine features.  The papers published in World of Wheels average around 5,000 words.

For both publications, we will accept queries, unsolicited manuscripts, and suggestions for story ideas.  Please tell us whether you have submitted your article elsewhere.

All submissions will be considered, but we cannot guarantee publication.

The CAA reserves the right to edit all submissions for length, style, and clarity.  For general matters of grammar and style, the CAA follows the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition.

How to Send Submissions

Queries and suggestions for story ideas may be emailed directly to the CAA at info@caaonline.com.  These may also be sent via regular mail to the CAA at 4075 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511, USA.

Manuscripts may be sent via email or on CD.  We can accept documents in MS Word format only.

Photographs may be sent as prints (which will be returned to you) or as digital files.  If you are sending digital photos, please save them as JPG or TIF files at the largest possible size, but do not alter or re-size the images.  We are not able accept images smaller than 300 dpi. If you are taking the photos yourself, please set your camera (or camera app) to its highest/best setting and save the photos exactly as they come off the camera.  These may be emailed (do not re-size them for emailing) to the CAA at info@caaonline.com. If the files are too large to email, please save them to a CD or DVD and mail them to the address above.

Details for Carriage Journal Submissions

Each issue of the magazine contains several feature articles.  The approximate length for these is 2,000 to 4,000 words, and there is usually space for around 15 high-quality photos.

Each magazine also contains several regular departments / columns for which we accept submissions.  The approximate length for these is 900 to 1,300 words (plus 1 to 3 high-quality photos).

  • The Road Behind: history of carriages or driving or early roads, plus reprints from old trade journals
  • In The Carriage House: collections of carriages or carriage-related items
  • In The Stable: equine breeds, harness, driving
  • Nuts & Bolts: information on carriage parts, types, identification, restoration, etc.
  • Memory Lane: memorable stories from CAA members

We also welcome the submission of news items, book reviews, letters to the editor, and essays for The Last Word, a personal-opinion column of approximately 750 words.
